Materials with a Message

'SWAY' LAMP

In today‘s world, where uncertainty seems to be the norm, it can be challenging to find acceptance in the unpredictable. For the design of SWAY, Jule Cats embraces the idea that sometimes the unplanned can lead to exciting outcomes. The shape of the design takes its inspiration from the fluid, unpredictable shapes that time can take. It’s a celebration of the beauty found in releasing control and gracefully swaying with the flow, even when things are uncertain. For this series, only natural materials are used.

Dimensions: 1,50 cm high
Materials: Water based resin, mineral powders.

'FLOW' MIRRORS

To what extent can time be controlled? This question led to the creation of ‘FLOW’: a series of vibrant designs made from recycled mirrors, natural minerals, and acrylic resin. This limited series tells the viewer that there have been many reflections before theirs, and there are many more to come. For this series, only environmentally friendly materials are used.

Dimensions: 70 cm x 40 cm
Materials: Water based resin, mineral powders.

'DROP' LIGHT PANEL

The 3,5 meter long light panel ‘DROP’ was commissioned by a design hotel in the Netherlands. The aim was to work with materials that were leftover from the construction, which resulted in this piece made from recycled wood, acrylic resin, and an epoxy topcoat to give the design depth.

'IN DISGUISE' VASES

The ‘IN DISGUISE’ Vases are inspired by memories connected to buildings and cities. Jule Cats collects the rubble of demolished houses in her hometown Rotterdam, and creates objects that show the beauty and emotional value of a waste product. The combination of contrasting materials which is used in the handmade limited series, evokes wonder and curiosity and literally offers food for thought.

'RISE' LIGHTS

The design of the ‘RISE’ Lamps reflects optimism and hope that can grow from waste. The series is inspired by memories connected to buildings and cities, and follows up on the concept of the ‘IN DISGUISE’ series, showing the beauty and emotional value of waste materials.

'SOLID' SIDE TABLE

The design of the ‘SOLID’ Side Table is inspired by a sense of belonging and strength that evolves when memories have been turned into a physical shape. When looking at this design, if feels as if the heavy material is floating on its thin legs. But just like the feeling of confidence, this design is solid as a rock.
